Former Ghana captain, Stephen Appiah has called for ex-footballers to be given more opportunities to lead the administration of the game in the country.
In an interview with Kumasi-based Sompa Radio, Appiah argued that former players are often overlooked for administrative roles in favour of technocrats, despite their unique insights and understanding of the sport.
He stressed that it’s not about language proficiency, but rather about having a deep knowledge of the game.
“Legends and former players are not getting the chance around football administration. I have learnt something, that football is run by footballers. It is not the grammar or English that you speak,” he said.
“It is about insights, that is why when I went to Italy, without speaking Italian I could understand the coach who was speaking Italian.
“I hope that one day, not me Stephen Appiah necessarily, but I hope one day; one of us will get to lead and we will all support.”
Appiah himself is highly respected in Ghanaian football circles for leading the Black Stars to their first World Cup appearance in 2006. While many of his former colleagues have pursued coaching roles, Appiah has yet to take on any management position.
The Ghana Football Association has traditionally been led by technocrats, with few former players involved in administration. Appiah hopes that one day, a former player will be given the opportunity to lead and be supported by all.
Regret
The former Fernabache star also expressed regret about using his personal resources to finance the Black Stars in the past.
He recalled that in the past he had to pay for some players’ plane tickets to honour national call-ups.
