Ghana’s former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, has been released from detention by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement following a judicial order, his lawyers have confirmed.

In a statement issued by Minkah-Premo, Osei-Bonsu, Bruce-Cathline & Partners, the legal team said Mr Ofori-Atta was released on 7 April 2026 and has since returned home to be with his family.

The statement added that he remains committed to pursuing due process in defence of his rights under the laws and constitution of the United States.

His family also expressed gratitude for the support and prayers received during the period of his detention.

Mr Ofori-Atta had been in custody since January 2026 after being detained by US immigration authorities over issues relating to his legal status in the country. Reports indicate the case centred on concerns about his continued stay in the United States, including an alleged visa overstay.

His detention also came amid ongoing legal and political developments in Ghana, including an extradition request by the government and investigations into alleged corruption during his time in office, although his lawyers have maintained the immigration matter was not linked to any criminal conviction.
