President John Mahama has announced that Ghana will introduce a visa-free regime for all African nationals, effective May 25, in a move aimed at strengthening continental integration and boosting economic activity.
The announcement was made yesterday during the inaugural state visit of Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa to Ghana.
The date for the policy rollout coincides with Africa Day, underscoring Ghana’s commitment to Pan-African ideals and its historical identity as a leading voice in African unity.
According to President Mahama, the initiative is expected to significantly enhance tourism and promote intra-African trade by easing travel restrictions across the continent. He described the policy as part of broader efforts to position Ghana as a gateway to Africa.
The visa-free entry policy will be implemented as part of a new electronic visa (e-Visa) system set to be launched next month by the Mahama administration.
President Mahama also indicated that the government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will continue pursuing additional visa waiver agreements to expand travel opportunities for Ghanaian passport holders. He revealed that since last year, Ghana has successfully negotiated 23 visa waiver agreements with other countries.
The policy marks a major shift in Ghana’s immigration framework and is expected to reinforce its role in advancing regional integration and economic cooperation across Africa.
