The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has directed Zakaria Abdulai to step aside from the party’s Juaben Constituency chairmanship race to allow for an unhindered investigation into allegations against him by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service.
The directive follows a fresh review by the party’s Functional Executive Committee (FEC), which said the decision was taken in the overriding interest of transparency and accountability.
In a press release dated Tuesday, October 20, 2026, and signed by the party’s General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the NDC said the latest position updates an earlier statement issued on October 19.
The party stressed that the directive does not constitute a determination of the merits of the allegations against Mr Abdulai, who remains entitled to the presumption of innocence.
“The Party trusts that the CID will conduct a thorough, fair and expeditious investigation, and will be guided by its outcome,” the statement said.
Mr Abdulai, who is the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS) and the NDC constituency secretary for Juaben, is facing allegations of sexual misconduct involving female students. The allegations remain under investigation.
The latest directive marks a reversal of the party’s earlier position. On October 19, the NDC announced that it would allow Mr Abdulai to contest the chairmanship election after reconsidering its initial decision to require him to withdraw or face disqualification.
The party has also directed the Ashanti Regional Election Committee and the Juaben Constituency Election Committee to take note of the decision and act accordingly.
The NDC says it will be guided by the outcome of the police investigation.
