At least three people have been confirmed dead and about 15 others injured following a violent clash in New Winneba in the Central Region.
The incident, reportedly linked to a land ownership dispute involving communities in the Effutu and Gomoa areas, occurred at about 10:40 a.m. on Tuesday, September 1, 2026.
According to the Ghana Police Service, about 300 irate persons from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze, armed with guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks, stormed the New Winneba Township.
The group allegedly attacked some residents and damaged shops, stores and residences belonging to natives of the area.
About 15 injured victims, including a police officer, have been sent to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba for treatment, while three people have so far been confirmed dead.
In response, personnel from the Winneba Divisional Headquarters and Agona Swedru District Patrols have been deployed to contain the situation.
The Inspector-General of Police has also deployed a reinforcement team from the National Police Headquarters, including two armoured vehicles, to strengthen security in the area.
The Police Service says the situation is currently under control, with further details expected to be communicated later.
