The Hohoe Magistrate Court has sentenced Esther Ofori, a provision shop owner, for refusing to participate in a communal clean-up exercise organised by the Hohoe Municipal Assembly on National Sanitation Day.
Ofori was convicted for contravening Section 21, Subsection 4 (i), (ii) and (v) of the Hohoe Municipal Assembly Bye-laws, 2018.
She pleaded guilty and was sentenced on her own plea to pay a fine of GH¢240, in default of which she will serve one month in prison.
Mr Daniel Dotse Eklo, an Environmental Health Analyst, told the court, presided over by Mr Lambert Y. Keriba, the relieving Magistrate, that the convict refused to participate in a communal clean-up exercise organised by the Assembly on Thursday, July 2, 2026.
He said the Assembly had designated the first Thursday of every month as a communal clean-up day, observed from 0600 to 1000 hours, to improve sanitation in the Hohoe township.
Mr Eklo said during the exercise, business premises were not allowed to operate within the stipulated hours, except pharmaceutical or drug stores and other businesses providing emergency health or humanitarian services.
He said bar operators, chop bar operators, market traders, shop owners and storekeepers were required to use their own resources to clean market areas and sheds, sweep the frontages of their shops and desilt drains during the clean-up period.
Mr Eklo said that at about 0922 hours on the day in question, the Municipal Sanitation Taskforce, while supervising the exercise at the Atabu area, found Ofori’s shop open and she was selling to members of the public.
He said her refusal to participate in the exercise was unlawful, leading to her being served with a court summons.
