This was USA’s first men’s World Cup opener game hosted in USA since 1994 and with 70,492 fans in the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, the USA thrived under pressure. Before this win, USA’s biggest World Cup win was 4-2 versus Belgium in 1930 making it 96 years and no USA team has since won a World Cup game by more than three goals. Mauricio Pochettino’s team ended that situation with the 4-1 margin over Paraguay. ” I don’t think it’s sunk in yet that we’re hosting a World Cup. There were a few moments in the game I kind of had to pinch myself a little bit” – Folarin Balogun, striker.Image of the team rejoicing image source: google

The USA played with intense energy and pace, dictating the game and forcing Paraguay into several high turnovers in their defensive third; they had built a massive 3-0 lead by half time. Folarin Balogun, the striker had a debut, scoring two goals as well as Captain Christian Pulisic was electric and constantly overwhelmed Paraguay’s defence in the first half. After playing at such a high pace, USA showed maturity in the second half, managing possession effectively to secure the win. Gio Reyna added an exclamation point off the bench with a stunning “trivial” goal. USA had a possession of 65% against Paraguay who had a 35% possession, USA had 16 shots versus Paraguay 9 and USA created 12 chances while Paraguay created 7. The win gave USA 3 points and plus-3 goal difference to start Group A. They later beat Australia 2-0 to clinch knock out qualification on June 19,2026. The Paraguay result was the statement.
