PassionAir has responded following an incident of severe turbulence involving one of its flights from Kumasi to Accra, which was carrying Kumawood actor Kwadwo Nkansah, popularly known as Lil Win, Ashanti Regional Minister Dr Frank Amoakohene and former Bantama Member of Parliament Dr Henry Kwabena Kokofu, among other passengers.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, aboard flight OP 149, which reportedly encountered severe turbulence shortly after take-off, leaving passengers frightened and concerned for their safety.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, November 4, PassionAir confirmed the incident, attributing the turbulence to sudden adverse weather conditions.
The airline explained that the weather-related occurrence was beyond its control and apologised to passengers for the discomfort and distress experienced during the flight.
“We sincerely apologise for any distress or inconvenience experienced during the flight,” the airline stated.
PassionAir further reaffirmed its commitment to passenger safety, assuring the public that the safety and well-being of its passengers and crew remain its highest priority.
The airline also stressed that its flight operations are conducted in accordance with applicable aviation safety standards, regulations and requirements established by relevant authorities.
Meanwhile, some of the passengers have recounted their frightening experiences during the incident.
Speaking in an interview on Lawson TV, Dr Kokofu described the experience as one of the most terrifying moments of his life, saying passengers heard a loud bang before the aircraft suddenly moved sharply upwards and downwards, creating what felt like a free-fall sensation.
He estimated that the intense turbulence lasted between three and five minutes, during which passengers screamed and prayed as they struggled to cope with the situation.
Dr Kokofu disclosed that Dr Amoakohene was seated beside him, while Lil Win was also among those on board. He further indicated that the aircraft was almost full, with only two seats unoccupied.
Lil Win also recounted the experience, saying heavy rainfall had begun shortly before the aircraft’s scheduled departure from Kumasi.
According to the actor, the aircraft began making unusual upward and downward movements after take-off, triggering panic among passengers. He said he tried to encourage and reassure others on board during the ordeal.
Dr Kokofu has also called for an investigation into the incident, indicating that he had instructed his office to formally petition the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) to establish the circumstances surrounding the occurrence.
The aircraft eventually completed its journey safely in Accra, with no reported disruption to the flight’s destination. However, the incident has brought renewed attention to passenger safety and the challenges of flying during adverse weather conditions.
