A 29-year-old tricycle rider, Naah Mashood, has been sentenced to 14 years’ imprisonment with hard labour after being convicted of defiling a three-year-old girl at Tiegber in the Wa Municipality of the Upper West Region.

According to a press release issued by the Ghana Police Service on Monday, November 2, 2026, the convict was arrested on February 24, 2026, by the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Upper West Regional Police Command following a complaint lodged by the victim’s mother.

According to the police, Mashood had been engaged by the child’s parent to transport her to and from school. However, on February 23, 2026, he allegedly lured the victim to an isolated location and sexually assaulted her inside his tricycle, locally known as a Cambuu.

After investigations, he was arraigned before the Wa District Magistrate Court, and the case subsequently proceeded to the Wa High Court for trial. He was found guilty of defilement and sentenced to 14 years’ imprisonment with hard labour on October 30, 2026, by His Lordship Justice Osei-Wusu.

The Upper West Regional Police Command has commended the officers involved in the investigation and prosecution of the case, as well as members of the public who contributed to ensuring justice was served.

The Command has also urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant and prioritise the safety of their children, while encouraging the public to report suspected cases of child abuse and defilement to the nearest police station or DOVVSU office for prompt action.
