The Ghana Police Service has arrested a 39-year-old suspect, identified as Michael Mensah, in connection with the murder of Innocentia Atsufui Avinu, the University of Cape Coast (UCC) student whose body was recently found at Hutchland Beach in the Cape Coast Metropolis.
According to a police statement, the suspect was apprehended by the Inspector-General of Police’s (IGP) Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team on June 15, 2026, at approximately 7:15 p.m. at the Pedu Lorry Station in Cape Coast following sustained intelligence-led operations.
Preliminary investigations indicate that on June 11, 2026, at about 6:48 p.m., the suspect, who reportedly claims to be a teacher but also works as a driver, picked up the deceased from Ayensu Plaza within the University of Cape Coast hostel enclave.
Police say the suspect subsequently transported the student to Hutchland Beach, where she was last seen before her death.
The arrest is the latest development in the ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of the Level 200 Bachelor of Commerce (Human Resource) student, whose body was discovered on the beach days after she was reported missing.
The Ghana Police Service has stated that investigations are still ongoing and assured the public that any further developments in the case will be communicated in due course.
