Member of Parliament for Ahafo Ano South East, Yakubu Mohammed, has issued an unqualified apology to the public following widespread criticism over comments he made about a schoolgirl during a recent visit to Parliament House.
In a statement dated July 31, 2026, the MP acknowledged that during an interaction with pupils from The Citasel School in the Sagnarigu Constituency, he described one of the pupils as “beautiful” and said he would marry her when she grows up.
Yakubu Mohammed explained that the comment was made in the context of the long-standing playful cultural relationship between the Mossi and Dagomba ethnic groups, describing it as part of the friendly exchanges that have historically characterised relations between the two communities.
He, however, admitted that regardless of his intention or the traditional context in which the remark was made, it was inappropriate because it involved a child.
“I sincerely regret my choice of words and render my unreserved and unqualified apology to the relevant authorities, the school authorities, the pupil, her parents and family, and the general public,” the statement said.
The MP also stressed that the comment was never intended to cause harm, disrespect, embarrassment or discomfort to the pupil, her family, the school authorities, the Dagomba community, or the general public.
Yakubu Mohammed reaffirmed his commitment to protecting and respecting the dignity, welfare and rights of every child, noting that as a Member of Parliament, he recognises the responsibility attached to his words and public conduct.
