The Electoral Commission (EC) has indicated it will complete its proposed new Voters Register for election 2020 by close of May.

The decision to compile a new voters roll has raked up considerable controversy, with the political parties and civil society divided over it’s prudence and timeliness, however the Director of Electoral Services at the EC, Dr. Serebour Quaicoe says the EC is going ahead with its programme and will announce a commencement date soon.

Dr. Serebour who spoke to Citi FM on Friday, acknowledged the approval of the EC’s budget for the Voters Register compilation and other activities for the year, said the funds are yet to be released.

Asked if the Voters Registration exercise will benefit from the impending national population census, he said the Commission’s activities do not depend on any other activities.

The Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) has added its voice to those of a number of opposition political parties, led by the National Democratic Congress (NDC), in asking the EC to desist from the planned compilation of a new register, however other parties, including the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) have thrown their support behind the EC.
