The management of Koforidua Technical University (KTU) has suspended all Students’ Representative Council (SRC) activities on campus pending the outcome of investigations by the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) into arrests made during the university’s SRC Week celebrations.
The decision follows a Friday, July 31, operation by NACOC on KTU campus, which led to the arrest of 10 individuals over suspected narcotics-related offences.
KTU has also constituted an independent committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, while NACOC continues its own investigations.
According to the university, seven of the 10 persons arrested have been identified as KTU students and remain in NACOC custody in Accra.
Speaking to Citi News after a management meeting, the university’s Head of Public Affairs, Macclean Lovelace-Dodoo, said all SRC activities had been put on hold until the investigations are concluded.
“The SRC events have been temporarily cancelled pending the determination of investigations that NACOC is carrying out,” he said.
Lovelace-Dodoo noted that the university would rely on the findings of both its internal committee and NACOC before determining any further action.
He added that management is also considering psychosocial support for students who may have been affected by the incident.
“What will happen is that, as I told you, a committee has been constituted, and NACOC is also carrying out its investigations.
“So, if there’s any programme at all to be carried out, then what will happen is that we have regulations. And if some counselling will be required, then students are given counselling,” he added.
