The Volta North Regional Police Command has secured the conviction of a 31-year-old woman, Stella Amedzorme, for abducting an eight-month-old child at the Kpando Market in the Volta Region.
According to a police press release, the incident was reported on July 17, 2026, after the child’s mother, 21-year-old Gloria Xagbe, informed police that she had briefly left her eight-month-old son in the care of Amedzorme, a fellow market trader, while she went to buy packaging bags.
Upon her return, both the suspect and the child were nowhere to be found.
Acting on intelligence, police arrested Amedzorme on July 18, 2026, at Toviate, a suburb of Kwamekrom in the Oti Region, and successfully rescued the child unharmed.
During investigations, the convict admitted to taking the child on the instructions of her fiancé, who remains at large.
Amedzorme was first arraigned before the Kpando Circuit Court on July 20, 2026, where she was remanded into police custody. She reappeared before the court on August 3, pleaded guilty to the offence, and was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment.
Police say efforts are ongoing to arrest the convict’s fiancé to assist with the ongoing investigation.
The Volta North Regional Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives, particularly children, and urged parents and guardians to exercise caution when leaving their children in the care of others.
