The Greater Accra Regional Health Directorate of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has strongly condemned the assault of a staff member at the Tema Community 22 Polyclinic, describing the incident as unprovoked and unacceptable.
In a press release issued on 5 June 2026, the Directorate stated that a midwife was attacked by a patient’s family member on Tuesday, 2 June 2026, while enforcing the facility’s visiting hours policy. The incident, captured in a video that has since circulated on social media, has attracted widespread public attention.
The Directorate expressed solidarity with the affected midwife and healthcare workers across its facilities, stressing that health professionals should be able to carry out their duties without fear of physical harm.
“We stand firmly behind the affected midwife and every member of staff across our facilities. They come to work to serve the public, and they must be able to do so without fear of physical harm,” the statement said.
The Ghana Health Service also commended the Ghana Police Service for its swift intervention, which restored calm at the facility and led to the arrest of the individual alleged to have carried out the attack.
According to the statement, the suspect is scheduled to appear before court on Monday, 8 June 2026. The Directorate stressed that violence against health workers will not be tolerated.
The Directorate further urged members of the public to channel grievances through the Client Service Desk, available in every Ghana Health Service facility, rather than resorting to violence.
Reaffirming its commitment to quality healthcare delivery, the Directorate called on clients to treat healthcare workers with the same respect and dignity they extend to the public.
